Sebastian Durham Costume for the Nurse, Euripides’ Medea Silk cotton, plastic sequins, glass beads, canvas My interpretation of the Nurse has grown out of my response to her sympathy with and connection to Medea and their shared experience as women facing subjugation in an ancient society. The themes of motherhood, womanhood and the other are integral to my interpretation- as represented by the embroidered organs and deep blue colour, that alludes to Mother Mary, and the ocean’s nurturing and maternal quality. I have interpreted the character in an eclectic and atemporal mode that draws from feminism, post modernism and the abject. I have strayed from the conventional, neo-classicist narrative of Greece’s pure, acropolis white, instead sampling multiple historical and social contexts to illuminate the Nurse’s social position. |
