The client, a newly established South African restaurant called “Oo Koek”, needed a visual identity, including a logo and menu that clearly represented the restaurant’s South African theme as well as a unique design for a takeaway food container. The logo was expected to include the name of the restaurant as well as either an animal or plant associated with South Africa. The logo designed incorporated a giraffe, with an orange sunset like background. The giraffe was designed to appear clean and simple to the eye, and yet comical as it’s licking its lips. This creates the illusion that the giraffe is hungry and alludes to the fact that it’s a restaurant’s logo.  The food container had the same orange colour of the logo and integrated the giraffe on the sides of the package. The giraffe’s horns poke out of the covering and as such gives the 2-D flat appearance of the giraffe an extra dimension. This effect emphasises the figure-ground within the design. The unique heptagonal shape of the package is different from the ordinary, and as such stands out more. The container is easily recognisable and is associated with the restaurant. The package includes handles and is thus easy to carry. While the material of the package is recyclable and is thus environmentally friendly.
