Declan Dooley

I regularly go down to the Williamstown Surf and Life Saving Club and their clubhouse is a tired old building in a beautiful and popular location. The extensive history of the suburb and the club inspired me to reflect the modern architecture of the surrounding area and design a new building as a watchtower to replace the viewing tower within the existing structure. This new building reflects the coastal environment using a wave shaped roof and an asymmetrical structure to represent the constantly changing beach conditions. The timber exterior is a reference to the maritime history of Williamstown while the elevated platform provides a wide and unobstructed view that optimises efficiency and safety for patrol teams utilising the tower.
