For this project I focused on the expression of inner human emotions through figurative art. I wanted to explore the meaning of moving forward in life by exposing one’s insecurities and vulnerable emotions to the outside world. I was inspired by artists such as Avogado and Mitsuko Kuroki who are very expressive with the figurative meaning through their portraiture works. By referencing mental health and detailed expression of human emotions it inspired me to incorporate the use of nature and darkness into my piece. I experimented with different versions of my chosen idea, positioning the subject and the flower at various locations on the canvas to figure out which was more suitable to portray my idea. I wanted to create a sense of breaking the 4th wall where the subject is lifting the curtain and stepping into the light where she is exposing her pain to the viewers. The red spider lily flower is used to symbolise reincarnation and starting anew. This flower holds a significant meaning within the Japanese and Chinese culture as they are involved in several legends. They are generally used during specific occasions such as funerals to honour the dead or a guide them into a new path in life.
