Junior School - Visual Art

This course is an introduction to techniques for producing ceramic sculpture. By engaging with the course work students will be producing both functional and sculptural pieces, some works will sit in both catergories.

Hand modelling techniques and skills will be experimented with and utilised to produce a collection of works. The developmental folio of each student documents ideas and plans through exploratory sketches. The act of constructing these works in three dimensions has students utilising a wide range of hand modelling techniques.

The course work also provides opportunities for experimention with glazing and other surface treatments. By enagaging with the course students will see their work go through the kiln firing process and thereby expand their knowledge of the technical aspects of this art form.

Students will study elements of art through their engagement with painting and drawing tasks of this course. They will be provided with opportunities to use their imagination whilst trying out new ideas and developing their skills.

The folio of work to be produced in the semester includes an application of a range of painting and drawing techniques, as well as an exploration of collage and mixed media. Preparatory sketches and experimentation are documented in the visual diary.

Students participate in both creating and making and responding to the arts within the practice of digital photography.

Students will learn the basic art elements and principles relevant to photography. They will use a variety of cameras to produce an image and learn correct tonal contrast and colour management. They will also digitally alter or enhance an image and work in stop motion.

Students will be assessed on the satisfactory completion of a folio of images and written tasks in their visual dairy.

Printmaking is the artistic process through which marks and images are transferred from one surface to another. A print is the result of this process.

Students will undertake a range of printmaking activities. These may include monoprints, relief printing, silk screening, intaglio, and drawing and design exercises.

A sculpture being a three dimensional object can represent and communicate a myriad of things. Through investigations and an understanding of art elements and principles of design students will explore methods of designing and making sculptures. Most sculptures involve shaping or reshaping materials and in this course modelling, casting and assemblage will be explored.

The course will introduce students to design and idea development through technical drawing skills and the communication of those ideas for a specific purpose and audience. This will involve the creative solution of design problems exploring both two and three-dimensional representational techniques.

Students will study and produce symbols, typography (lettering), poster and layout design, illustration, plans and maps, package design and drawing conventions and three-dimensional representation.
