In selecting their Mathematics units, students should first:
- Decide how many units of Mathematics they wish to do (usually 2 or 4 Maths units per year).
- Check that the units they select will allow them to do the units 3 and 4 at Year 12 that they need to proceed to their preferred courses at tertiary colleges and universities.
Year 11 | VCE VM Numeracy | General Maths (1&2) | Mathematical Methods (1&2) | Specialist Maths (1&2) | |
Year 12 | VCE VM Numeracy | General Maths (3&4) | Mathematical Methods (3&4) | Specialist Maths (3&4) |
The following table shows your possible options for Units 3 and 4 considering the Units 1 and 2 are completed:
Units 1 and 2 | Units 3 and 4 | |
---|---|---|
VCE VM Numeracy | leads to | VCE VM Numeracy |
General Maths 1&2 only | leads to | General Maths 3&4 only |
Mathematical Methods 1&2 only | leads to | General Maths 3&4 only Mathematical Methods 3&4 only General Maths 3&4 and Mathematical Methods 3&4 |
Mathematical Methods 1&2 and Specialist Maths 1&2 | leads to | General Maths 3&4 only Mathematical Methods 3&4 only Mathematical Methods 3&4 and General Maths 3&4 Mathematical Methods 3&4 and Specialist Maths 3&4 |
Students wishing to study Specialist Mathematics 3&4 in Year 12 are encouraged to study Specialist Mathematics 1 & 2 and Mathematical Methods 1&2 in Year 11.
Note: If students wish to study Specialist Mathematics 3&4 by only completing Mathematical Methods 1&2 in Year 11 they need to discuss this option with their teachers.
