What is it and why should I do it?
In English Literature, students read and discuss a range of texts such as poetry, plays and prose from the Western literary canon, as well as modern texts. You gain invaluable skills in understanding the generic conventions, techniques, language patterns and style of texts. You gain a deep understanding of the significance of characters, settings and events in shaping reader response. You also study the structures and linguistic and literary features of particular forms of text.

What will I do in class?
In discussions and written work you explore, interpret and reflect on different ideas and values represented in literature. You use evidence from the texts to support a response. You will discuss works of literature and develop an ability to examine patterns of language and imagery used in the text. You formulate your own ideas and consider how contexts influence readings of texts. Extensive writing tasks are set for developing these skills.
