What is it and why should I do it?
Students are tasked with designing and making a series of metal-based jewellery pieces through which they will develop a clear understanding of the design process, metal-smithing techniques as well as learning how to work with a client to make work for someone else.
You will design functional wearable pieces combining traditional techniques and style with contemporary practices.
You will design items such as earrings, pendants, rings and brooches.
Students will also explore how a range of artists and designers are working within this space.
What will I do in class?
This subject will focus on a semester length design project, with all components contributing to your final Contemporary jewellery items. This content will include preparation tasks to explore and develop potential ideas, including design drawings within a folio.
You will explore and produce your resolved design using various techniques and materials.
A self-evaluation will be completed at the end of the task of your product reflecting on the making process and how you may improve the design further if produced again.
As a student designer you will investigate the practices of other contemporary makers and their sustainable practices to write a report on your chosen maker.
We will have one main piece as the focus in our first term and then move into a specialised area focusing on different enamelling techniques if time permits.
