What is it and why should I do it?
Students are tasked with designing and making a series of metal-based design objects through which they will develop a clear understanding of the design process, metal-smithing techniques as well as learning how to work with a client to make work for someone else.
Students will also explore how a range of artists and designers are working within this space.
Designing functional everyday objects, multi-functional wearable pieces and other such items as small scale furniture, bowls, utensils for example.
Students will explore how they can create meaning through the combination of this materials in creating pieces which represent something meaningful to them.
This subject encourages students to look within, and reflect on the social, environmental, and cultural aspects of their life, as well as their likes, dislikes and interests.
What will I do in class?
This subject will focus on 1 semester length design project where you work with a client (classmate) to produce an object that you will trade upon completion. All components will contribute to your final Product Design work. This content will include preparation tasks to explore and develop potential ideas, including design drawings within a folio.
You will explore and produce your resolved design using various techniques and materials.
A self-evaluation will be completed at the end of each task, reflecting on the making process and how you may improve the design further if produced again.
As a student designer you will investigate the practices of other contemporary makers and their sustainable practices to write a report on your chosen maker.

How do I satisfactorily complete this unit?
All folio, practical work and the evaluation will be completed productively during class time. Students will use home time to allow for thinking and considering of various design considerations for your project. There maybe one assessment task set as homework.
