What is it and why should I do it?

Through working with wood and related materials, this course aims to develop a variety of practical skills and understanding of timber technology.

The subject will be based on producing one or two (depending on complexity and time) projects over the semester, using the Design Process as a framework.

Students will explore the characteristics and properties of a variety of timbers through their projects, whilst learning the safe and correct use of hand and some power tools.

In addition to the practical component of the subject, students will choose a research topic to explore.

What will I do in class?

Students will design and a wood product within their interest area. 

Students will have the option to choose from making a small table, a cabinet or bookcase/ display piece, OR depending on skill level and experience, other related projects for example a Trinket/ Jewellery Box, Bread/Chopping Board.

Assessment will be based on the Design Process, as follows:

  • Design Brief
  • Workshop Drawings
  • Construction Step Table
  • Evaluation of your completed product/s

Students will also select a topic for a Research project within the following areas of study:

  • timber sustainability and growth
  • historical or contemporary building/furniture making techniques
  • timber tool technology.

Each student will require a 2H pencil and a sketch book for designs, plans, notes and evaluation.
