Title of Work: What it Means to be Beautiful

Medium: Photography

The intention of my photographic series was to produce 12 photos that explore how beauty standards have evolved over the last century. Each photograph focused on a different decade, from the 1910s to now, where I did my hair and makeup in a way that mimicked what was viewed as beautiful and popular at the time. Additionally, I selected a variety of tops to suit the corresponding decade, in order to complete the different looks. I then edited each picture to appear as though it was taken in the relevant decade to improve the overall authenticity of the production. The aim of this series is not only to entertain viewers but to inform them of the way historical beauty ideals have changed over time and to remind them how diverse beauty truly is.
