| Alice Treloar‘Oceans in Her Head’ Inkjet print on Ilford Metallic Gloss paper My series Oceans in Her Head explores the combination of internal conflict with environmental chaos such as the powerful crashing of the waves. The photographs demonstrate aspects of transparency, contrasted against opaque portraits. The aim was to capture external chaos through the natural, powerful conflicts within the environment. The ocean is one of the most powerful and unpredictable forces on the planet, thus it was photographed to communicate external chaos. The ocean, symbolising power, strength, life, mystery, hope and truth was the main source of inspiration behind my final artwork Thea JonesTwo separate series’ that encapsulate the ideas which I explored through out the past two years of VCE. As specified in my exploration proposal I aimed to focus on the blur between the real and unreal, through surrealism as both an idea and movement. Using a long shutter speed and large aperture in both series’ they share a similar blurred effect which obscures the subject. The first two images using studio lighting are much warmer compared to the natural lighting of a dark bathroom. All images revolve around my obsession with surrealism namely as a form of expression for women. In all photographs I use myself as the subject as a result of the years circumstances as well as a way to have control of my own movements but less of the cameras. Using self portraiture I was able to elude to female surrealists of the 20s and 30s and explore the perception of the body obscured by steam, light, form and movement. |
