A new Study Design for Music is being introduced in 2023. The structure of VCE Music has significantly changed; there is now a single music study option at the Unit 1&2 level.
Music Unit 1
Organisation in music
Music: Unit 2
Effect in music
What is it and why should I do it?
Units 1 and 2 Music focuses on the study of three core musical concepts that will prepare students for selecting a specific subject focus in Units 3&4:
- Analysing and responding
Students choose an instrument (including voice) or sound source as their focus for the study to learn and perform music in group and solo settings.
This sequence is for students who have an interest in performing and/or creating music. It is open to students of all musical backgrounds and experiences, with the study designed to provide a diverse range of content and opportunities for students to continue developing their craft as a musician.
What will I do in class?
Classes are mostly practical in nature, with the study of creative and theoretical concepts always linked back to achieving practical outcomes.
In the current 4-period per week structure, students will have at least two periods per week as complete practise/rehearsal/workshop style classes. Overall, students will:
- Practice and perform music works in group and solo contexts.
- Analyse music compositions and performances
- Study theoretical concepts and language
- Develop aural skills to identify intervals, scales, chords, melody, and rhythm
- Create/compose new musical works
All students will learn/develop the skills to be self directed, work independently to develop musical knowledge/skills at their own pace, as well as musically collaborating with others.
How much homework will I have?
It is expected that students will practise their chosen instrument/sound source for at least 2.5 hours per week (ie 5x 30min sessions).
Students should also dedicate 1 - 2 hours per week practising general musical concepts/material studied in class.
We highly recommend that students enrol in one-on-one instrumental lessons. The PHSC Music Department provides access to highly experienced teachers across most instruments. Enrolment details can be found here:
How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?
Outcome 1 | Performing
- Rehearse and perform regularly throughout each semester in both group and solo settings.
