What is it and why should I do it?

Biotechnology uses cellular and genetic engineering techniques in order to improve the lives of people and improve the health of our planet. 

Everyone benefits from biotechnology every day. From creating penicillin to vaccine development to genetically engineered crops to bacteria that eat plastic and so much more. The modern world has been built with biotechnology and the tools that it employs.

Biotechnology is an experimental look at advanced biological techniques. Students who are aiming for any science based subject and or medical based degree will benefit from completing the unit.

What will I do in class?

The class will involve learning about basic biotechnology techniques and applying those techniques experimentally.

In class students will learn and apply

• Cellular Biology (The structure of different cell types)
• Protein synthesis (How cells make proteins)
• A septic techniques (How to grow bacteria and test bacteria)
• Genetic engineering techniques (How can we change the genetic structure of the cell to perform tasks that benefit humans)
• Experimental design (How can we successfully test our techniques)
• Bacterial antibiotic resistance and susceptibility (How antibiotics work and why they are now not working)
• Basic Immunology (Basics of diseases)

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

Students enrolled in the course will complete and/or submit the following tasks in order to pass

• Test based assessments
• Practical write-up assessments
• Extended experimental assessment
• Exam
