Evangelia Angelique BousiosFor my project this year, I looked at the theme of portraiture. One of the artists that I was inspired is actually a photographer Andy Deluca. I really liked the photos he took in 2018 at the 5 Seconds of Summer Youngblood concert. One of my potential directions were watercolours of some photos he took, but I didn’t end up going with it as I preferred the look of the band in the earlier years. I was also inspired by renaissance but mainly pre-Raphaelite paintings, I really like the style and aesthetic of those paintings. When it came to deciding what I wanted to do for the final artwork, I couldn’t decide at all until I finally settled on painting my favourite music band 5 Seconds of Summer. Originally I wanted to try going in a style that is reminiscent of Johanne Vermeer, but that was extremely difficult so I went with my drawing style and tried translating that to paint form. When it came to materials I used Jo Sonja’s acrylic paint, with mainly small paint brushes since I did the paintings on canvas’s that were 8x10 inches. This paint I found is a really good quality, in smoothness, strength and colour variants. The technique I used ended up being in a similar process that I do drawing in the sense of the style. First I always start with the background, and then moving on with blocking in the large spaces with a base colour. After a few layers and if I’m happy with the look I work on the eyes (sometimes I line some parts of the face before the multiple base layers so I can pin point where those parts are). Once I finish the eyes I line everything with the smallest brush that I have with a dark brown. After that I do details like a wash of shading and then it’s done. |
