What is it and why should I do it?

VCE French is the study of the French language and culture whilst developing the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing.

VCE French requires communication in French in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes. These purposes include discussion, exchanging information, writing in different text types and interpreting from one language to another. Lessons are generally instructed in the target language.

Students will study the three prescribed themes:

 The Individual (Family, School)

The French-speaking communities (French colonisation, New Caledonia)

The world around us (Health and Lifestyle)

What will I do in class?

Lessons focus on the prescribed themes and topics which will be discussed in French. Students will participate in a range of activities targeting the language skills:

How much homework will I have?

You would have at least 30 minutes of homework on each night you have French class, with more over the weekend and leading up to assessments. Students are encouraged to practise essential language skills including listening (French news/films/songs, etc.) reading, writing (essays/answers to questions/summaries/letters/presentations/grammar and vocabulary exercises) and ICT-based language learning.

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

To gain an S for any VCE subject you need to demonstrate that you have met the Outcomes. Demonstration of achievement of outcomes and satisfactory completion of a unit are determined by evidence gained through the assessment of a range of learning activities and tasks.

You will meet the Outcomes through your completion of writing tasks, grammar based activities, participation in class discussions, and completion of coursework.
