What is it and why should I do it?

Classical Studies explores questions as: what is a hero? what is the nature and impact of war? why was mythology significant to the people of ancient Greece? These and other concepts are explored through the literature, politics, philosophy, history, archaeology and architecture of the archaic and classical periods.

Classical Studies will appeal to students who are curious and interested in the origins of western civilization. You will develop the ability to analyse, evaluate and respond to classical works and to understand the relationship between a work and its society.

What will I do in class?

You will be required to complete a variety of task: short answer questions, research reports, oral presentations, essays and group activities. The class involves reading and discussing a variety of works: epic poems, plays, secondary/primary documents, watching documentaries and examining pottery and sculpture.

We also attend two excursions throughout the year to the Hellenic Museum and the N.G.V.

How much homework will I have?

Homework may range from completing unfinished work, reading set material and/or researching activities and preparing for SACs. (Several hours of homework per week is anticipated)

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

Attendance is compulsory.

Line about outcomes (see example), brief description of the types of assessments used to meet those outcomes and some idea of frequency (Do you do 4 tests a semester? 10 tests a semester? Write 3 essays? 7 essays?)
