This course is great for people who wish to deepen their understanding of the modern world. If you enjoy learning about social and political movements and their impact on the world, then this is the course for you. Topics of study include Ideology and Conflict (e.g. Nazi Germany), Social and Cultural Change (such as the USA in the 20s and 30s), Competing Ideologies (like the Cold War) and Challenge and Change (e.g. Ending apartheid in South Africa &/or Israel & the Arab World). Completing this course will assist with your written and verbal communication, and help you to analyse current events and think critically about the world.
Lessons typically involve examining primary and secondary source materials, responding to questions verbally or in written form and working individually and in small groups. Focus will be spread across examining the content and continuing to develop your writing skills, particularly in regards to source analysis and essay writing.
You would be expected to revise course work for at least two hours a week, as well as work on formal and informal learning tasks such as presentations or practice essays. Regularly revising sources to support your knowledge would be required.
Each Unit has two SACs, and there is a half yearly and yearly exam as well. The assessments are based on your ability to communicate your knowledge in writing, both short answer and essay style response. To complete the unit, you need to attend regularly and contribute to class, and submit all assessments.
