Activity Summary
This activity involves three days of cross-country skiing on Mount Sterling and staying at our Mirimbah Country Campus. There will be a minimum of two PHSC staff and approximately 40 students attending the camp. All participants will have ski instructor sessions and ski along a range of skill level courses. The group departs at 6.30am on Monday and returns at approximately 5.00pm on Thursday. Transport, accommodation, ski hire and food is provided for volunteers.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Volunteers for the Year 8 Cross Country Ski camp will be expected to fulfil the following duties:
- Travel up and back to the Mirimbah Camp on the bus with students and teachers providing oversight and supervision of students on the journey and at any stops
- Provide oversight for students preparing pre-planned meals, including preparation of lunch packs for days of skiing
- Support teachers in planning/preparation of any camp activities for students - games/quiz/etc.
- Stay each night of the camp in one of the dormitory rooms and provide oversight of students (volunteers will not share rooms with students, but may share with other teachers or adult volunteers)
- Assist with organising students on the mountain to collect ski gear and divide into groups as instructed by teachers
- Join teacher + qualified ski instructor in group to provide supervision and support for students while on the mountain
- Ensure that students are following safe skiing practices and support skiing activities
Activity Description
The camp runs from Monday to Thursday with the following key activities typically conducted each day:
Monday
- Depart Monday Princes Hill Secondary College 8:30am
- Arrive Mansfield 12pm for food pick up and lunch. (All staff supervision)
- Depart Mansfield 1pm.
- Arrive Sawmill Settlement 1:45 pm, unpack bus and store food.
- Camp safety brief 2:15pm. (All staff supervision)
- Delatite River walk 2:45 pm.
- Room allocation and dinner preparation 5:15pm
- 6pm Dinner and clean up (All staff supervision)
- 7pm onwards on-snow safety discussion, on-mountain safety discussion; nightime activities such as journal writing, dvd's, games.
Tuesday, Wednesday
- 6:45am wake up, breakfast, clean up and gear preparation.
- 8:15am depart Mirimbah campus
- 8:50am Arrive at Telephone Box junction for equipment hire lessons.
- All ski groups, beginner and intermediate, supervised by one of the teachers, still to be decided. Roll checks throughout the day.
- 10:40am on-snow snack stop
- 12:40pm on-snow lunch stop.
- 4pm Arrive at Telephone Box Junction, Roll check, return of skis and poles, collect boots and mountain departure.
- 4:40 Arrive Mirimbah campus.
- 5pm Dinner preparation
- 6pm Dinner and clean up (All staff supervision)
- 7pm onwards review the day’s events, reminders on safety, address any issues that arose on-snow, nightime activities such as journal writing, dvd's, games.
