What is it and why should I do it?

Students will learn and put into practise the fundamental principles of sport coaching, including the studies of leadership, skill development and various sports sciences. In the learning context, elements of technical, tactical, and mental growth are examined in relation to both community sport and the developing athlete. Multiple areas of study lead into the VCE PE course.

What will I do in class?

Practical

  • Identify the components of a training session; developing warm-ups, skill-based drills, activities that develop game-sense and modified games and a debrief
  • Research and learn about teams sports (as negotiated by the students and teacher), then learn and practise the skills/drills that can lead to competency in them
  • Attend at least one PHSC Junior Sports Day, where roles may include coach, team manager, umpire or scorer
  • Coach peers, PHSC junior classes and local Primary School Students
  • Students will develop motor skills, understand rules, strategies and techniques for their specific sports
  • Learn how to model and promote positive attitudes towards health and fitness, including inclusive, respectful behaviour

Theory

  • Students will initially complete an AIS Online Course, focused on developing the essential skills for Sports Coaching. This will include how to create a safe learning environment, develop and demonstrate strong leadership skills, the importance of organised training sessions and how to engage with young learners
  • Students will design and submit an in-depth Lesson Plan for each of the sports they are coaching (1 per term)
  • Develop and deliver an Oral Presentation on a coach of your choice. Coach can be for sports that are domestic, international, amateur or professional
  • Students will examine Characteristics of Fundamental Motor skills, how to enhance sport-specific skills and the development of game-sense through sports training

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

As well as completing the four Learning Tasks on Compass, students will assist in coaching roles at junior Sports days plus 10-12 sessions as a local primary school.

In addition to these tasks, students will be encouraged to develop their interpersonal and leadership skills throughout the semester. There is even the opportunity to coach local sports teams, with financial compensation on offer for most of these roles.
