What is it and why should I do it?

VCE English Primer is a compulsory subject. It will build on the skills and understanding you have developed so far in English, while also focusing on preparation for Year 11 English. You will find elements of the course are similar to Years 7-9 English, but you will also complete new tasks which will introduce you to aspects of VCE English. 

What will I do in class?

Class activities will include a range of indiviudal and group work, whole class and group discussion. You will learn about the construction of the English language, read, discuss and complete a close study of a literary text, experiment with and create writing in a variety of genres on the idea 'Writing about the Future', analyse how language is used in the media, and practice your own oral presentation skills.

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

You will be provided with opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of each of the units studied through written classwork, homework, participation in class discussions and completion of Reportable Learning Tasks. Formal assessment will based on a range of tasks set by the teacher throughout the semester, including a analytical text response essay, writing for various purposes and audiences in a range of text forms, a prepared speech, a test and an essay analysing argument and language. There will be an English exam at the end of the unit.
