Szentek: Come and See the Great Holy Spectacle (coloured pencil, acrylic paint and gouache on paper)

Temple Grave (coloured pencil, acrylic paint and gouache on paper)

In my pieces I wanted to explore the inevitable gap between self-expression and perception. In Szentek, I used the design principles of early 20th century magazine covers and the symbol of the halo to comment on the idealised vision of ourselves we cultivate for others. In Temple Grave, I continued this to consider the desire for understanding and immortalisation, contemplating the uncontrollable nature of self-expression as something which warps according to the views and experiences of others.  I decided to express this through the analogous concept of death and legacies after life. In both, I was also exploring modes of cultural expression through the patterns and dolls of Indonesia and Hungary, applying the concept to broader cultural narratives.
