What is it and why should I do it?

VCE Italian is the study of the Italian language and culture whilst developing the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing.

VCE Italian requires communication in Italian in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes. These purposes include discussion, exchanging information, writing in different text types and interpreting from one language to another. Lessons are generally instructed in the target language

Students will study the three prescribed themes:

The Individual (Family, School and career pathways, Healthy lifestyles)

The Italian speaking communities (Migration, Gastronomy)

The world around us (Changes in the roles of men and women)

What will I do in class?

Lessons focus on the prescribed themes and topics which will be discussed in Italian. Students will participate in a range of activities targeting the language skills:

  • Listening and responding
  • Reading and responding
  • Written expression in a variety of text types (e.g. article, report, blog, letter, journal entry, speech, etc.)
  • Speaking (responding to questions, participating in class discussions, expressing views and opinions, dialogues, role-plays, oral presentations)

How much homework will I have?

You would have at least 30 minutes of homework on each night you have Italian class, with more over the weekend and leading up to assessments. Students are encouraged to practise essential language skills including listening ( Italian news/films/songs etc) reading, writing ( essays/answers to questions/summaries/letters/presentations/grammar and vocabulary exercises)and ICT-based language learning.
