| Lucy Cambridge “Untitled” “Scrutinising through hands” Inkjet prints “Distortion upon distortion…the more one uses the mind, the more confused one becomes.” (Laozi). Inspired by Lee Friedlander the ideas, themes and techniques that I have combined in the production of these two artworks intwine and relate back to the main theme of distortion, and manipulation of everyday scenery from something mundane to something much more elusive. Artwork 1 “Untitled” focuses mainly on reflections of graffiti against a puddle of water, creating an almost perfect resemblance of the model and his surroundings. Artwork 2 “Scrutinising through hands” focuses on mainly providing an alternative way to absorb current surroundings and the life that is unfolding around you. Eyes are placed on-top of hands as a symbolic gesture to confuse and intrigue audience members, leading back to the true meaning of distortion which aims to confuse and bewilder. Photoshop was a main component in the final production of these photos as a way to crop, brighten and to improve lighting levels. This generated emphasis on the colours and reflections most prominent in artwork 1, as well as the blending of the eyes and hands in artwork 2. These small, yet effective changes combine together providing a misleading account or impression. Furthermore, there is no particular way to interpret this style of photography, allowing for each viewer to explicate the images in a way that is unique to them.
