What is it and why should I do it?

Show me the money! Ever dreamt of being your own boss, and not having to answer to some pushy manager? Then this could be the subject for you. Unit 1 is all about business ideas - how did the world's leading entrepreneurs come up their brilliant schemes? How does a business dream become a reality? If I want to start my own business, where do I begin? This subject will answer those questions, and help you understand the nuts and bolts of getting a business off the ground. Unit 2 gets into the nitty-gritty of establishing a business - how do I suck customers in with clever marketing, and avert a PR disaster? Is this business legally compliant? How do I hire the best staff, and keep them motivated to work for me?

The beauty of this subject is the way in which it's immediately applicable to the world around us, and will prepare future you for life in the workforce.

What will I do in class?

Heaps of stuff! We pull apart contemporary news articles, watch videos and chat about how the concepts we study can be seen in real-time in businesses around the world. Business is a Humanities subject, so we practice writing short-answer responses, and ways of expressing ourselves succinctly and directly. There is a combination of group and individual work, and students have the chance to exercise their creative muscle - formulating their own business ideas and learning how to market their own product or event in a simulated environment.

How much homework will I have?

Homework will usually consist of unfinished class work, pre-reading and preparing for assessments. It is also important for students to keep an eye on business news to find case studies that relate to the theoretical content we've been studying.

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

By attending all classes, completing set classwork and SACs (usually one for each outcome). If you do not pass a SAC, you are able to demonstrate understanding of the content through completion of class work and classroom engagement. SACs take various forms and can be case study's & short answer questions, individual and class-based projects.
