Evin Turan

The theme of my artworks revolves around my cultural identity and the exposing of hidden, and often oppressed, indigenous cultural practices; both the beauty within the traditions and customs, and within the people themselves. I aimed to create a visual narrative through the physical natures of my culture, and especially how these are distinguished in the modern Kurdish diaspora, as a people with no national state. Hanging these on a white wall, I worked to portray this story using acrylic paint with an impasto medium on canvas for Artwork 1, Jina Kurd*, and oil paint on canvas and charcoal on canvas for Artwork 2, Mal U Welate Jina Kurd*.

The subject matter I explored throughout my visual diary was how the media we consume as a population effects our worldview and mindset, and the power that therefore is held by those that distribute such media. These themes are presented through the medium of drawing, presenting the distorted worldview that the media creates through grotesque stylised cartoons and caricatures. Throughout the piece I included depictions of different demographics of people, to represent the wide variety of people the media impacts. These depictions of people are often distorted with wide bulging eyes and contorted grins, indicating the distortion on how we perceive ourselves and each other based on what media we consume as humans. As well as different people I included a lot of imagery and iconography relating to genres of media types ranging from icons that have engrained themselves within the public zeitgeist such as fantasy and sci-fi tropes to more niche media forms such as Japanese horror tropes and counter culture aspects like hip hop.
