What is it and why should I do it?

Interested in fashion, design, or creative work? This elective could be a great fit.

You'll explore the foundations of fashion and textile design, including how clothing can express identity and culture. The course also looks at the environmental and ethical sides of the fashion industry. Along the way, you'll build practical skills like sewing and design, and work on hands-on individually customised projects.

This course is a good choice if you're curious about fashion, textile art, creative expression, or sustainability, or if you just want to learn how to design and make things yourself.

What will I do in class?

  • Explore the way fashion helps people show their identity as individuals or members of a group. You'll look at how different subcultures—like punk, goth, hip-hop, skaters, and streetwear communities—use style to stand out, share beliefs, and express creativity.

  • Design and make a customised tote bag using decorative techniques.

  • Investigate fashion production systems (mass manufacturing vs artisan methods).

  • Sew a wearable garment from a pattern (e.g., skirt, shorts, or top).

  • Create a showcase project that reflects your personal style or message through fashion or textile art.

  • Maintain a design folio with sketches, fabric samples, and planning.

  • Take part in class discussions, group tasks, and peer/self-reflections.

How do I satisfactorily complete this unit?

Practical, theoretical and folio-based work can be completed productively during class time. Students can use home time to allow for thinking and developing what their personal style and design choices mean in relation to to the explored topics and assessment tasks throughout the semester.
