What is it and why should I do it?

Through working with You will use a variety of resist materials, like metal , wood and related materials, to create functional and aesthetic products.

This this course aims to develop a variety of practical skills and the understanding of timber technologyDesigning Products.

The subject You will be based on producing one or two (depending on complexity and time) projects over the semester, using the Design Process as a frameworkreflect on Australian makers' practices with consideration to choosing sustainable materials, and the selection of a variety of industrial and traditional materials.

Students will explore the characteristics and properties of a variety of timbers resist materials through their projectsproject, whilst learning the safe and correct use of hand and some power tools.

In addition to the practical component of the subject, students will choose a research topic to explore.

What will I do in class?

Students will design and a wood product within their interest area. 

Students will have the option to choose from making a small table, a cabinet or bookcase/ display piece, OR depending on skill level and experience, other related projects for example a Trinket/ Jewellery Box, Bread/Chopping Board.

Assessment will be based on the Design Process, as follows:

  • Design Brief
  • Workshop Drawings
  • Construction Step Table
  • Evaluation of your completed product/s

Students will also select a topic for a Research project within the following areas of study:

  • timber sustainability and growth
  • historical or contemporary building/furniture making techniques
  • timber tool technology.

Each student will require a 2H pencil and a sketch book for designs, plans, notes and evaluation.

This subject will focus on a semester length design project, with all components contributing to your final Product Design work. This content will include preparation tasks to explore and develop potential ideas, including design drawings within a folio.

You will explore and produce your resolved design using various techniques and materials.

A self-evaluation will be completed at the end of your task, reflecting on the making process and how you may improve the design further if produced again.

As a student designer you will investigate the practices of other contemporary makers and their sustainable practices to write a report on your chosen maker.

How do I satisfactorily complete this unit?

All folio, practical work and the evaluation will be completed productively during class time. Students will use home time to allow for thinking and considering of various design considerations for your project. There maybe one assessment task set as homework.
