What is it and why should I do it?
This subject is broken into to themes:
1. Classical Classical works and ways of knowledge
- How do we value different sources of knowledge, including art, ancient artefacts, logic and mythology?
- What is truth?
2. Classical works and morality
- What makes a hero?
- What constitutes goodness, and how is it perceived in different contexts?
- Is it better to suffer wrong than do wrong?
- In what ways does our society shape the concept of goodness and ethical decision-making?
- Are we completely driven by shame and pride?
- How does socio-political context affect gender roles and power systems?
What will I do in class?
Throughout this subject students will use artefacts, images, texts and videos to investigate attitudes towards morality, heroes and knowledge in ancient societies. Students will engage in class discussions and projects to assess the extent to which they believe that these belief systems are still relevant today. Students will undertake an excursion during the semester.
