What is it and why should I do it?

In Art you will develop a folio of work that allows you to express your own ideas and interests within a range of areas of our study. You will explore methods of art production on paper in a variety of materials; these experimental works will lead to production of a finished work that takes the form of a painting on stretched canvas. This artwork will be exhibited in a mid-year exhibition.

What will I do in class?

You will be developing your ideas and themes in your visual diary. This content will provide material for production of an experimental collection of works on paper. You will also produce paint experiments to prepare you for your final canvas painting/s. The class will learn how to prepare a canvas from start to finish with a custom-built frame.

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

Participate in all set work and complete your power-point presentation on the work of one artist to address topics the class will be introduced to as part of the coursework.

Reportable Task 1 – Annotated Art Practice

  • You will collect art and images for inspiration to direct your own folio work, these pages of work are annotated and labelled to include dates, art movements, visual language, and personal reflection.
  • Your own experimental works and finished artwork/s will also be reflected on to address visual language and personal insights.

Reportable Task 2 – Experimentation in a range of media

  • You will produce a collection of works on paper that display a variety of materials and techniques in both wet & dry media.
  • The themes you explore in these experiments will be derived from your own personally selected folio inspiration.
  • Techniques used by a range of current exhibiting artists will be introduced to the class to encourage experimental approaches in your use of materials.

Reportable Task 3 – Completed stretched canvas painting

  • This painting will take the form of either one stretched canvas or a series of smaller stretched canvas paintings that work as an expression of your ideas.
  • The final format will be chosen by you to best reflect your personal folio concepts.

Reportable Task 4 – Art Responding assessment

  • You will research and analyse the work of one artist. The content will be presented in a power point presentation with visual aids that provide insight into style, inspiration, and techniques.
  • There will be a list of artists to choose from for study, every student in the class will study a different artist.
  • These presentations will enable us to share our learning and discover works from a range of periods in history made in varied geographic locations.
