What is it and why should I do it?
If you want to understand what the Universe is, how it began, evolved, and will eventually end, astrophysics is the only way to go. In astrophysics students will learn the theories explaining the origins of everything, exploring the nature of matter, consider the origins of atoms, time, and space, and examine scientific theories of the Universe's origins. They investigate topics such as the limitations of matter origin models and the discovery of cosmic background radiation. Students will also explore stellar investigations, where students examine the birth, life, and death of stars, analyse properties of starlight for information, and explore challenges and advancements in observing and understanding stars and blackholes.
Students should choose this subject as it offers a unique opportunity to dive into the understanding of physics by exploring theories that unravel the origins of matter and stellar bodies. They will delve into the fundamental nature of matter, contemplating the origins of atoms, time, and space, while analysing scientific theories and the evolution of matter throughout history.
What will I do in class?
In class, students will use scientific skills and experimentation to explore and learn about:
- The Big Bang as a currently held theory that explains the origins of both time and space.
- The changes of matter during the different stages of the Universe over time.
- Neutrons, neutrinos, positrons and Higgs bosons.
- Matter and antimatter.
- Gravitational waves.
- Compare the nature of leptons, hadrons, mesons and baryons.
- Identify the properties, evolution and classification of stars.
- Nuclear fusion.
- Black holes.
How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?
In order to achieve an S (Satisfactory) grade, it is necessary to showcase your fulfillment of the Outcomes.
Meeting the Outcomes will be evidenced by your performance on topic tests, active participation in class discussions, involvement in practical experiments, and successful completion of assigned coursework.
