What is it and why should I do it?
Music: Performance is the next step up from the Year 8 elective "The Band". Students will form four bands to work in for the semester and learn what it takes to put on a gig at a real venue: The Bergy Band Room on Sydney Rd! Classes will focus on developing students individual musicianship, transcribing skills (learning music by ear and creating a chart) instrumental skills, and ensemble skills. This will include musical cues and non-verbal cues. Students will experience related skills to enhance their abilities as performers, including how to setup band equipment, approaches to individual practise, music theory, and musical analysis. This will additionally inform and support how students structure and complete their own individual practise for homework outside of class.
What will I do in class?
Classes will feature lots of practical based tasks, as well as time dedicated to the study/analysis of key musical knowledge, skills, and techniques required to perform to a high standard.
It is expected that across a fortnightly cycle students will have:
- 2x double periods for rehearsing in bands
- 1x workshop style task with practical activities for group work (not necessarily band related)
- 1x study/analysis class
How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?
Students are required to complete an end of semester performance in their allocated band, as well as completing the following tasks:
- Group performance of 4 - 6 musical works
- Music Gear/PA Setup (test)
- Approaches to practise (Multimedia Report)
