What is it and why should I do it?

This

Through working with wood and related materials, this course aims to develop a variety of practical skills

and techniques when working with wood and related materials.

The subject will be based on producing one or two (depending on complexity and time) projects over the semester, with the Design Process implementation as the focal framework.

Students

You

will explore the characteristics and properties of a variety of timbers through

a series of

their projects,

whilst learning

that will involve the safe and correct use of hand and some power tools

.

In addition to the practical component of the subject, students will choose a research topic to explore.

What will I do in class?

Students will design , and make several a wood products product within their interest area. Assessment will be based on an Investigation on current designers, a research assignment on timber growth and sustainability, design brief and workshop drawings, and the satisfactory completion and evaluation of your products

Students will have the option to choose from making a small table, a cabinet or bookcase/ display piece, OR depending on skill level and experience, other related projects for example a Trinket/ Jewellery Box, Bread/Chopping Board.

Assessment will be based on the Design Process, as follows:

  • Design Brief
  • Workshop Drawings
  • Construction Step Table
  • Evaluation of your completed products

Students will also select a topic for a Research project within these areas of study:

  • timber sustainability and growth
  • old world or contemporary building/furniture making techniques
  • timber tool technology.

Each student will require a 2H pencil and a sketch book for designs, plans, notes and evaluation.
