The last two years have been strange indeed. We have been, as I recall my grandfather (who was born in 1899) was wont to say, cabined, cribbed, and confined. This is a line from Shakespeare’s Macbeth that speaks to the protagonist’s sense of mental unease following his murder of Duncan the king and Banquo. Yet great art, creativity and innovation can often be found where there are difficulties, challenges and impediments to overcome. As a musician, one of my favourite observations about creativity and artistic freedom comes from Igor Stravinsky’s Poetics of Music. ‘I have no use for a theoretic freedom...And yet which of us has ever heard talk of art as other than a realm of freedom? This sort of heresy is uniformly widespread because it is imagined that art is outside the bounds of ordinary activity. Well, in art as in everything else, one can build only upon a resisting foundation: whatever constantly gives way to pressure, constantly renders movement impossible. When I first walked in the door of Princes Hill High School as a young teacher in January 1985, I was astonished by the extent of the Arts and Technology program, the quality of student work and the passion and commitment of the team of staff working in the area. Later, I would become part of that team as I took a new career direction as a music educator at Princes Hill. Every year I continue to be surprised, delighted and moved by the creativity of our students and the encouragement and inspiration of our teachers. This is almost invariably made manifest each November in our well attended Year 12 Art Exhibition (along with a host of other events, shows and performances). 2020 has been especially difficult for many in the arts, including in schools. Yet with typical commitment and creativity from our staff and students, and the perseverance and resilience of our young artists we have we have moved to an online format to view celebrate and share student artistic creativity. Perhaps my favourite quote on creativity comes from the composer Igor Stravinsky who said, “My freedom thus consists in my moving about within the narrow frame that I have assigned myself for each one of my undertakings. 2020 has certainly seen us constrained, yet it can move us into new frames and ways of seeing. Please enjoy our online exhibition and may your spirit be unshackled. Trevor Smith
Principal I shared this perspective last year and do so again here, hoping that the release of constraint at the end of 2021 can itself be equally inspiring! Trevor Smith (Principal)Princes Hill Secondary College |
