Elective subjects generally combine students from both Years 9 & 10. Students will select their preferences for electives at the end of the previous year. Considerable effort is put into ensuring that students’ elective allocation is fair. Within these electives each student must include a minimum of one subject per semester in both Art/Technology and Physical and Personal Development.

Students will not be permitted to repeat electives, have an unbalanced course (e.g. six Physical Education electives in one year, or make arrangements to ‘swap’ electives if they are unsuccessful in their first choice. Requests to change electives will be processed in the first two weeks of each semester only.

Charges for electives will appear on the school charges and voluntary contributions sheet.

Year 10 student elective preferences are processed first. Elective preferences submitted on time will be processed before late submissions.

 English Plus

The course aims to build confidence in using language in different modes.  The course will focus on skill development in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.  It complements the study of English and offers support to individual students.

Languages

 Languages

Italian or French

The study of a language offers the opportunity for development in cognitive and linguistic skills, as well as being valuable for employment, travel and intercultural understanding.

Studying Languages at VCE level is also an advantage for entrance to tertiary institutions. Students will develop personal and interpersonal skills, as well as developing oral, aural and grammatical skills in Italian or French. They will also study the history, geography and culture of Italy or France. Assessment will be based on successful completion of work requirements, including workbook, assignments, class activities and homework. They will cover the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Students are expected to participate in a poetry competition and the ACER Assessment of Language Competence.

There is a New Caledonia Study Tour organised every even year that is open to students studying French in Year 8-11. It runs for 10 days in November. The France Study Tour is open to Years 10-12 and is organised in November, every alternate year for about 3 weeks.

Year 10 students studying Italian will be given the opportunity to participate in the Italy Study Tour organised every odd year during September. It runs for about 18-21 days.

 Physical and Personal Development

The following electives are available in the Physical and Personal Development:

 Sports Coaching

Semester 1

Students will learn about the skills and requirements to become a good coach, such as, communication skills, fitness programming, biomechanics, skill acquisition and nutrition. They will coach their peers as well as junior students from neighbouring primary schools. Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing, participate in practical classes, work cooperatively and satisfactorily complete theoretical and practical assessment.

Teachers may organize excursions to sporting events which may require payment.

 Dance

Semester 2

Students will be introduced to a number of dance styles, such as break dancing, hip hop, swing, African, bush, belly and ballroom. They will be required to learn dance steps and create their own performance. The unit will consist of one theory period per week for health and fitness, and three practical classes. 

 Healthy Lifestyles for Girls

Semesters 1 & 2

Students will be encouraged to develop positive and healthy lifestyles in the following areas:

Fitness, diet, body image, personal identity, recreation, yoga, relaxation, non competitive sports, aerobics, massage, meditation, cycling, lawn bowls, 10 pin bowling, dance, community health, etc. The course will be adapted to the needs and requests of the group.

Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing, participate in practical classes, work cooperatively and satisfactorily complete theoretical and practical assessment.

 Healthy Lifestyles for Boys

Semesters 1 & 2

Students will be encouraged to develop positive and healthy lifestyles in the following areas:

Personal fitness, diet, personal identity, recreation, non-competitive sports, community health, alternative health and fitness, and risk taking behaviour etc. The course will be adapted to the needs and requests of the group.

Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing, participate in practical classes, work cooperatively and satisfactorily complete theoretical and practical assessment.

 Outdoor Education

Semesters 1 & 2

This subject aims to develop social and interpersonal skills, personal, recreational and spiritual values, improve physical fitness and health and increase environmental understanding and appreciation.

Students will study navigation, equipment, clothing, first aid, survival techniques, preparing outdoor adventure trips, conservation issues, camp cooking, tent preparation, cycling, rock climbing, bush walking and canoeing.

Students will be assessed on the successful completion of work requirements, including wearing appropriate clothing, working cooperatively, participating in practical classes, theoretical and practical assignments and attendance at an overnight camp.

There is a fee of $120 to cover the cost of practical activities and a three day camp at a cost of $110.

 Boot Camp

Semesters 1 & 2

Boot Camp is designed to extend students physically, beyond their normal class experiences. Students complete 10 sessions of self defense with Frank Barca from Precision Martial Arts. The course will incorporate elite training methods which will allow students to work to their full physical potential. All components and principles of Fitness Training will be investigated with an emphasis on team work, team building and student cooperation. This is a subject for those wishing to increase their fitness and those wishing to really extend themselves physically and mentally.

 Major Team and Ball Sports

Team and ball sports in the Middle School comprise of the following activities:

Semester 1

Students will develop motor skills, understand rules, strategies and techniques, develop positive attitudes towards health and fitness, understand human physiology and biomechanics, and develop an awareness of community issues relating to sport and develop acceptable social behaviour.

They will undertake a range of skill development activities in the above sports.

Students are expected to wear appropriate clothing, participate in practical classes, work cooperatively, satisfactorily complete theoretical and practical assessment and participate at the Intermediate Interschool sports days in terms 1 and 2.

 

 

 

Note: Students must select at least one Physical Education or Health Education subject each semester.

 Technology Studies

The following subjects are available in Technology Studies:

 Fashion Studies

Students will develop skills in order to successfully produce garments and textile pieces, become proficient in using different techniques and equipment and understand the importance of a safe working environment. They will investigate, design, produce and evaluate a range of designs and production methods.

Students will be assessed on the completion and quality of the work requirements, individual skill development, effort and attitude.

Home study will consist of design briefs, investigation into the work of a designer and materials and their application.

They will need to purchase a small sketch book, fabric, thread, notions such as zips and possibly a commercial pattern.

 Food Technology

Students will assess food using criteria such as taste, texture, appearance, etc. They will replicate restaurant quality food, and plan, design and produce a product of their own choice. They will investigate, design, produce and evaluate.

Students will be assessed on the completion and report on the major production, and on their workbook and journal.

 Jewellery Making
 Students will learn about ways of making jewellery, develop an appreciation for good design, and learn the process of manufacture. They will investigate, design, produce and evaluate a range of designs and production methods. This may include fabricating, colouring, stone setting and casting. All students will participate in the Middle School Challenge and exhibit their work both on-line and via the college website and the MS Exhibition. 

Assessment will be based on the quality of the completed work, including practical projects, design folio and work on the subject wiki. (Personal Learning)

 

Students will contribute a fee towards the cost of materials through the School Charges.

 
 Kiln Formed Glass
 Kiln formed glass uses cold glass that is placed in a kiln for firing. Students will be involved in cutting, fusing, slumping and the casting of glass to produce a range of pieces from platters and bowls to sculpture and decorative art works. They will investigate, design, produce and evaluate a range of designs and production methods.

Students will be assessed on work produced, sketch book and a written project on visual analysis and response to glass art.

 Metal Technology

This course aims to explore and expand on a variety of skills, techniques and processes used in working with metals and related materials. Students will learn these in conjunction with practical work. All students will participate in the Middle School Challenge and exhibit their work both on-line and via the college website and the Middle School Exhibition. Students will investigate, design, produce and evaluate.

Assessment will be based on the quality of the completed work, including practical projects, design folio and work on the subject wiki. (Personal Learning)

 Wood Technology

This course aims to develop a variety of skills and technology when working with wood and related materials. Students will explore the characteristics and properties of a variety of timbers through a series of projects that will involve the safe and correct use of hand and some power tools.

Students will investigate, design, produce and evaluate.

Assessment will be based on investigation of alternative design approaches by designers, design brief and workshop drawings, and the satisfactory completion and evaluation of the products.

Each student will require a 2 H pencil and a sketch book for designs, plans, notes and evaluation. There will be a fee of $30.

 Multidisciplinary Electives

The following subjects are available in Multidisciplinary Studies:

(These units all incorporate elements from a variety of areas, including Communication, Humanities, Science, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Interpersonal Development and Thinking)

 Robotics and Information Technology Essentials

In the Robotics component of the course, students will investigate robots, their importance and how to build and program robots to perform a variety of increasingly complex actions, culminating in the Robot Olympics, which consists of three key events; the Sprint, the Lap of Death and Greco-Robot wrestling.

The Information Technology Essentials component of this elective has two parts. In the first part, students learn touch typing techniques and basic spreadsheet skills to enable them to prepare a budget. In the second part, students in small groups will strip a computer, identify the parts and their roles and then rebuild the computer. Students have to record this process and then present it in the form of a research project with clear digital images and instruction.

Students are not required to own a computer. Where it is necessary, students may be expected to work outside class time to complete assignments using the school’s computers if the hardware and software is not available at home.

Assessment will be based on the design, programming and production of their robot over the length of the course and the satisfactory completion of their IT Essentials assessment tasks.

 Multimedia Gaming

This course will focus on simulation gaming. Students will gain knowledge by challenging their ideas and concepts-exploring why something occurs and the relationship between objects. There is a heavy focus on problem solving.

Students begin the course by analysing what makes a game, what makes a good game and the learning behind making games. Students then work through a series of different game types using GameMaker software that are designed to explore the basic concepts of the program and use these to build a variety of games of their own.

Students then analyse the strengths and weaknesses of these different game types and use their evaluation to design a better game of their own. The students then build their own game and self and peer evaluate it upon completion.

Assessment will be based on the design, production and evaluation of a series of games over the length of the course.

 Creative Writing

This course is based on the principle that good writing grows out of storytelling. Students will have the opportunity to write their own stories and read and appreciate the stories of others. They will focus on communication and interpersonal development, as well as developing their thinking skills.

Assessment will be based on a folio of writing and other tasks as determined by the teacher and the class.

 Sport

Sport is played throughout the school year against other schools within our group 

Term 1: Tennis, volleyball, cricket, baseball/ softball 

Term 2: Football, soccer, netball, badminton 

Term 3: Hockey, basketball, table tennis, squash 

Athletics and Swimming Carnivals will be held during the year at both intra and inter school levels. 

Intermediate and Senior sports teams will be advertised during the year.

 Dollars and Sense

This unit will expose students to the world of money and start them on the path to financial independence. The course will require students to invest $50,000 of virtual funds in the stock market and trade stocks against syndicates throughout Australia.

Through a variety of hands-on projects, exercises and excursions students will explore the answers to personal finance questions such as:

  • How will I get paid if I get a job?
  • What could I do with my money?
  • How can I get the best mobile phone deal?
  • What if I want to buy a car?
  • What is the stock market and how do you invest in it?
  • What is a budget and do I need one?
  • Could I get a bank a loan?

Students will get to interact with real bankers and personal financial advisors throughout the course and learn the basics of sound financial decisions.

Assessment will be based on participation and satisfactory completion of work requirements.

 Teacher Assistant Program for Year 10 (TAP)

This is a new initiative where a Y10 student can work with a teacher to support and learn more about a specific learning program in the school. Students will assist the teacher for the four periods of one elective. You will need to approach the teacher and request that they take you on in an apprentice type role. Only students that have demonstrated reliability, initiative, good attendance and integrity, will be accepted into the program.

The type of work a student might be involved in could include assisting with gear organisation, coaching, setting up equipment, completing admin tasks, tutoring, clerical duties etc. Students could work in any subject area depending on their interests and a teacher’s willingness to participate in the program. Students may also be interested in working in the general office or library.

The program is based on a similar program widely available in the USA. Students will benefit by getting to know more about the management of schools, experience in team work, job ready skills, demonstrating responsibility and initiative.

Teachers will complete a report which could be used as a future reference.

Students are permitted to undertake the TAP once in the Middle school elective program and must gain consent from a parent and Year Level Coordinator as well as the supervising teacher.
