What is it and why should I do it?
Art is a subject that allows for development of a range of technical skills. In Unit 1, you will explore personal and structural influences as well as reflections on your own personal art making. You will create a clear record of your personal ideas and skill development and take a personal idea into a finished artwork. Unit 2 looks at cultural and contemporary art influences as well as reflections on your own personal art making. You learn how to create a clear record of ideas that reflect knowledge of contemporary art and culture as well as a document of your skill development, and take cultural research and ideas into a finished artwork.
What will I do in class?
In Art we devote 3 periods a week to our folio work and artmaking. One period of each week is dedicated to discussion and note-taking that contributes to a final comparative writing task.
How much homework will I have?
Additional work outside of class hours is required for completion of artworks and the final essay.
How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?
To gain an S for any VCE subject you need to demonstrate that you have met the outcomes. In Art, Outcome 1 is your written analysis work and Outcome 2 is submission of your annotated folio and at least one completed artwork, and there are different requirements for these in Units 1 and 2.
Outcome 1: On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse and interpret a variety of artworks using the Structural and Personal frameworks.
Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student should be able to use the art process to create visual responses that demonstrate their personal interests and ideas.
Outcome 1: On completion of this unit the student should be able to discuss and compare artworks from different cultures and eras using the Cultural and Contemporary frameworks.
Outcome 2: Students are to produce at least one finished artwork as a result of their sketchbook explorations. The sketchbook is to demonstrate observation and imagination in developing culturally informed visual language. This is to be clearly documented and annotated in a sustained folio of work.
