What is it and why should I do it?

Visual Communication Design is a subject that examines how ideas, information and messages are conveyed in the fields of communication (graphic), industrial (product) and environmental (architectural) design.

Visual Communication Design is a self-directed folio subject in Unit 3&4 that can lead to many different study and career pathways for students that study it.  If you are interested in pathways such as; advertising, animation, architecture, cartography, cartooning, costume design, education, fashion design, film making, fine art, furniture design, game design, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, interior design, landscape design, multimedia, publishing, product design, set design, signwriting, textile design, visual merchandising and web design you should consider Visual Communication Design as your folio can assist you to gain entry to these tertiary courses.

How much homework/study will I have?

All Unit 3 and 4 subjects require 3-5 hours of study per week.  In VCD your homework will involve completing design and research related activities that are not finished in class.  It will also involve a significant amount of SAC and SAT related work where you respond to a design brief utilising the structure of the design process.  Design analyses and reports are also included in your homework.

What contributes to my study score?

4x SACs, a SAT and an end of year Exam.

How do I satisfactorily complete the unit?

To pass gain an S for any VCE unit subject you need to demonstrate that you have met the Outcomes.unit outcomes.  In Visual Communication Design you will meet the unit outcomes through the completion of coursework and assessment tasks.

Outcome 1 - On completion of this unit the student should be able to create visual communications for specific contexts, purposes and audiences that are informed by their analysis of existing visual communications in the three

Outcome 2 - On completion of this unit the student should be able to discuss the practices of a contemporary designer from each of the design fields and explain factors that influence these practice.

Outcome 3 - On completion of this unit the student should be able to apply design thinking in preparing a brief with two communication needs for a client, undertaking research and generating a range of ideas relevant to the brief
