Exhibition 2020 | Awards

When I first walked in the door of Princes Hill High School as a young teacher in January 1985, I was astonished by the extent of the Arts and Technology program, the quality of student work and the passion and commitment of the team of staff working in the area. Later, I would become part of that team as I took a new career direction as a music educator at Princes Hill.

Every year I continue to be surprised, delighted and moved by the creativity of our students and the encouragement and inspiration of our teachers. This is almost invariably made manifest each November in our well attended Year 12 Art Exhibition (along with a host of other events, shows and performances).

2020 has been especially difficult for many in the arts, including in schools. Yet with typical commitment and creativity from our staff and students, and the perseverance and resilience of our young artists we have we have moved to an online format to view celebrate and share student artistic creativity.

Perhaps my favourite quote on creativity comes from the composer Igor Stravinsky who said,

“My freedom thus consists in my moving about within the narrow frame that I have assigned myself for each one of my undertakings.
I shall go even further: my freedom will be so much the greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles. Whatever diminishes constraint, diminishes strength. The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one’s self of the chains that shackle the spirit.’

2020 has certainly seen us constrained, yet it can move us into new frames and ways of seeing.

Please enjoy our online exhibition and may your spirit be unshackled.
